Como, five-star luxury overlooking Piazza Cavour: the former Hotel San Gottardo reopens, work has started
This time we are really here: the former Hotel San Gottardo, a decayed nobleman stuck in the heart of Como between piazza Cavour, via Fontana and via Cairoli, is about to be resurrected in earnest. Indeed, it is already resurgent, if you want to flavor what is happening with a pinch of optimism (based on real facts, at least). After about thirty years of oblivion and abandonment, in spite of the various recovery hypotheses that emerged and then ended up on dead tracks, life has returned to the gray beast. Naturally – and this is the best possible news – in overalls, helmets and assorted tools. now a white drapery well hooked to scaffolding and metal pipes is the first sign that something has changed. So, let's get into the details. We do it - even if we still have a legit discretion regarding details - with the professional who designed the restoration of the former Gotthard, the architect Elisabetta Cavalleri.
"For now, the ordinary maintenance phase has begun - explains Cavalleri - The removal of the old windows, the freeing of the rubble that has accumulated in the rooms over the years, the punctual topographical surveys and other operations are therefore underway. in general safety. There are some parts that are unusable, so drones and lasers will also be used for the detailed surveys which will then be used by the structural engineers". In short, preparatory operations for the massive real recovery. From now on, however, we can have a picture of what the historic hotel will become. “The structure will always be recovered as a hotel, it will become a five-star luxury hotel – explains the architect Cavalleri – The common areas of the hotel and the restaurant will be located on the ground floor. While the rooms, which will number no less than seventy, will be on the upper floors". Another notable aspect: the former San Gottardo (or whatever its name will be once the maxi restoration is finished) will retain the aspect - obviously in a "glittering" form - that made it part of the history of Como. “There is a bond on the building – confirms Cavalleri – So we will not touch anything of the original facade, beyond the complete restoration. Washes and consolidations will be carried out, but the appearance will not change. Indeed, we are trying to understand what the original color was, which is not so simple since even the period photos are obviously in black and white. Stratigraphies will be carried out to obtain the precise tint”. Finally, the times. “It is always difficult to indicate a precise date – Cavalleri began – but let's say that for the summer of 2025 we count on the hotel to be able to open to the public”.
